Advisor to the Waldrapp Ibis Species Survival Plan
The Waldrapp Ibis (also known as the Northern Bald Ibis) is a critically endangered bird which is native to North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Dr. Gai serves as an information resource to zoos in the U.S. who hold this species. She became interested in these birds in 2002, when she started working with them at the Micke Grove Zoo. Up to 40% of the Waldrapp Ibis in captivity have chronic skin problems and to date, no cause or cure has been found for this condition. To learn more about this fascinating bird and efforts to protect it, please visit www.waldrapp.eu.
Children's Book Content Consultant
Dr. Gai has worked with Capstone Press on multiple children's books about animals. She has been thrilled to review and contribute to several book series about animals for young readers, and finds this type of work a delightful diversion from her busy practice.
Computer Game Consultant
Legacy Interactive, creators of Zoo Vet and Zoo Vet: Endangered Animals, invited Dr. Gai to participate in the creation of computer games that simulate a day in the life of a busy zoo veterinarian. She contributed several actual cases from her experiences as a zoo veterinarian, and helped game designers understand the steps that are involved in diagnosing and treating a variety of illnesses in zoo animals.
